University diploma Global Safety for Journalists

This university certificate is designed for field journalists, whether they are covering conflict zones or conducting sensitive investigations that expose them to physical, legal, or psychological risks. In a context where threats against media professionals are becoming increasingly diverse (physical violence, cyberharassment, legal pressure, or even post-traumatic stress disorder), risk management is all too often left to individual experience, intuition, or informal advice shared among peers. While this approach has its merits, it reaches its limits in the face of the growing complexity of the field and does not guarantee either the safety of journalists or the continuity of their investigative work.

The goal of this university diploma program is precisely to break away from this improvisational approach by establishing risk management as a discipline in its own right, with its own body of knowledge, methods, and tools. The goal is to equip journalists with solid, transferable skills such as risk assessment before and during an assignment, digital and physical security protocols, stress and trauma management, and knowledge of the applicable legal framework so that they can carry out their work with greater peace of mind and professionalism. By combining theoretical instruction with practical scenarios, this course aims to establish journalist safety as a recognised and valued skill set, with editorial or writing skills.

The training takes place at the EJCAM campus, 21 rue Virgile Marron, 13005 Marseille.
 

Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired:

• Practical skills covering security engineering and risk assessment, operational command and tactical first aid, digital protection and cyber resilience, as well as psychosocial and ethical management.
   
• Academic knowledge, focusing on the theory of information and democracy, international law, geopolitics, and risk analysis.
   

Admission to the program is based on application materials and/or an interview for candidates who meet one of the following criteria:

• Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree
• Be a journalism student
• Be a practicing journalist
